In preparation for the 50 th anniversary of the Landing, the municipality conceived the idea to make it a memorial in honour of soldiers of the 29 th and 35 th Divisions that fought for the liberation of the city. Restoration work began immediately and was completed in 1994. The Chapelle de la Madeleine, listed as a historic monument in 1974, was acquired by the city of Saint-Lô in 1988.
